The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new landscapes, but seeing with new eyes”– Marcel Proust.

Our in-depth studies explore the subtle internal forms of the practice of Ashtanga Yoga to help students understand the energetic alignment and biomechanics of their bodies, and to come to new perspectives on how to move more intelligently, creating a practice that honours individuality. We will explore the detailed nature of anatomy, physiology and therapy through the observation of common body patterns, introducing new pathways of awareness, to inspire insight, enhancing the student’s process of discovery.

Our investigation will allow the students to establish an internally rooted yoga practice where we learn how to move organically with a mindful awareness of the subtle art of breathing, mudra and bandha – as we believe that without that understanding the mechanical approach of the poses can lead to injury.

Daily schedule

We will start our mornings at 8am with either a led or Mysore class, then a short break for lunch – the afternoon sessions (4 hours) will alternate:

  • Breath and Bandhas principles;
  • Therapeutic insight: honouring the individuality of our bodies;
  • Observation skills: developing intuition to help your students.

You will be provided with the AYL manual course written by Marie Kerr, founder and head teacher of Ashtanga Yoga Luxembourg.

Breath and Bandha principles

We will start by going through the anatomy of the breath then proceed with an investigation into the anatomy of the three main bandhas which will be engaged and practiced, as the breath is first to be explored then the actions of the bandhas can be consciously enhanced.

We will explore breathing techniques to obtain specific results by exerting more control over the patterns – these techniques are used to make adjustments to our inner states, whether our desire is to meditate and/or function properly in our life.

In this course, we will be offering a map to help you understand ideas about the yogic practice of pranayama and give you the tools for exploring yourself.  We believe that as the physiology reflects the psychology, as the breath reflects our state of mind but also our movement patterns, these tools are indispensable to both our physical and mental well-being.

Therapeutic insight: honouring the individuality of our bodies

It has become clear that yoga practice involving asana, pranayama and meditation do work therapeutically, the work done with the poses provides us with the tools for our everyday posture, correcting imbalance in our ways of movement and being. The goal is a better way of simply existing.

We will first explore the structural perspective of postures and health and the approach to postural realignment within the framework of the ashtanga sequence; we will be doing so by an evaluation on how misalignment and imbalances can lead to therapeutic problems in the asana practice. Then the fundamental emphasis will be to empower the students to make their own paradigm shift towards realignment, recognizing the patterns of movement and imbalances that could lead to injury.

We will combine our investigation with the importance of fluidity within the body – how organs, fascia, blood, lymph, and cerebral spinal fluids support our movement and give us new experiences of awareness, fluidity, and connectivity. When we are able to integrate these insights into our yoga practice, they illuminate internal relationships and pathways from inner to outer expression, create new ways to experience our authentic nature, as well as regulate and maintain proper metabolic functions.

Some observational skills will then be foreseen.

Observation skills: developing intuition to help your students

In this course we will develop our intuition and observation skills of the body structure on how to give appropriate assistance to postural energetic realignment within the poses – exploring hands-on adjustments and also deeming when it may be preferable to use props or verbal cues.

Who can join us?

Our In-Depth Studies is open to all our students and is part of a mentoring program.

We believe in continuing education: remaining a student is essential to teaching and we are devoted to creating pathways for teachers to continue their learning, supporting each of our student’s direction and growth.

We remain open to the application for external yoga practitioners who wish to deepen their practice, understanding and knowledge and those with a possible desire to teach or who are already teaching.

We welcome the application of both Hatha and Ashtanga practitioners as our teaching can be beneficial to everyone with an established yoga practice – whatever style of yoga that may be.

The acceptance is subject to approval, an application form is available online:  info@ahstangayoga.lu.

Who will you be studying with?

During our In-Depth studies you will be studying with Marie Kerr, founder and main teacher of the first Ashtanga Shala in Luxembourg where she upholds the daily Mysore/Self-Practice program. Her unique absolutely non dogmatic approach combines the significance of the physical anatomy of yoga – helping to understand exactly what you’re achieving for the body in terms of lengthening, straightening and creating stability, providing the students with a context for an even more deep understanding of the values of yoga practice, together with the anatomy of the energetic body – which for her is the key to understanding not only optimal functioning but also the relationship within yourself and others.

She sees yoga practice as a tool – and the Ashtanga sequence as a framework that, with the help of insightful assessment and guidance, becomes our daily companion for removing both physical and psychological obstacles, releasing old stagnant energies stuck in the body from trauma, stress, injuries, postures and helping us to restore normal function. Her class welcomes any students from very beginners to experienced yoga practionners and yoga teachers all with a willingness to learn, tailoring the sequence for each individual as a model for self- exploration rather than a goal to be reached.
